The History of Olde Naples

Founded in 1886, Olde Naples has a charm of its own. The original town was centered around the historic Naples Pier which was built in 1888 as a freight and passenger dock.  Narrow gauge train rails spanned the length of the pier transporting freight and baggage in the early 1900’s. Part of the structure was razed by a fire in 1922 and was rebuilt after being damage by hurricanes in 1910, 1926 and 1960.  It is a favorite spot for local fisherman and provides one of the best places to view one of Naples´ spectacular sunsets. Today it remains a public symbol of the area’s history.

The original settlers fell in love with the weather, beaches and sunsets and did not hesitate to take advantage of all that area had to offer.  Millionaires Row was the first line of beachfront homes built at the turn-of-the-century and the area has since grown and now encompasses the region from Mooring Line Drive, south past the Pier and eastward to Naples Bay.

In 1911, Barron Collier, visited Useppa Island and was so enamored with the area that he purchased over one million acres of swampland including most of Naples.  Believing that Naples would experience a boom similar to that of the east coast, he spent over a million dollars of his own money to construct Tamiami Trial.  Opening in 1926, it was the only paved highway connecting the state´s two largest cities – Tampa and Miami.

Olde Naples Today

Although he did not live to see it, development began to thrive and Olde Naples became the city that it is today.  Points of interest abound and include the many historical sites starting with the Pier and continuing with the numerous historic homes that have been preserved and are now open to public.

Take a stroll down any avenue and you find majestic Banyan trees, flowering Poinciana trees and stately Palms. Homes run from historic cottages to glorious mansions on the beach and you will find charming condominiums and boutique hotels along the way.

The homes range from 800 to 11,500 square feet with one to six bedrooms plus a den and up to an eight car garage with most of the smaller ones being original.  The villas range from 1,200 to 2,883 square feet with two up to five bedrooms plus and a one to three car garage or a one car carport.  The coach homes range from 965 to 4,823 square feet with two to five bedrooms and a one to two car attached garage.  The verandas range from 1,053 to 2,588 square feet with two to three bedrooms plus a den and a one car detached garage.  The condos range from 350 to 2,693 square feet with zero to three bedrooms pus a den and a one carport spaces or assigned parking.

At the end of your walk you will find yourself on the Naples beach, always a great place to spend a day on the sand.  Any stroll would not be complete without a tour of the glorious shops, sophisticated boutiques, charming cafés, world class restaurants and the many art galleries and antique shops on 5th Avenue South and in the 3rd Street area.
