The cyclical rise and fall of seawater is known as a tide. Tides develop because of gravitational interactions between the Earth, sun, and moon. The timing of tidal cycles is related to the rotation of the Earth on its axis and the revolution of the moon around the Earth. Extreme tidal events, known as spring tides, occur when there is an alignment of the gravitational forces. The further north, the higher the tide.In Naples, the difference between low and high tides is only about four feet.

If you are shelling, you will want to go right after high tide when the shells have been washed up on the beach. On the other hand, if you are going to walk or jog, you will want to go close to low tide when the beach is smooth and firm.
